Are you preparing for Railway (RRB) exams? Worried about the typing test? Here are simple answers to common questions about RRB typing tests.

What is RRB typing test?

RRB typing test is a computer-based test for Railway jobs. You have to type a passage in 10 minutes. The test checks your typing speed and accuracy.

What speed do I need to pass?

For English typing:

  • Minimum speed: 30 WPM (Words Per Minute)
  • Maximum Permissible errors: 5%

For Hindi typing:

  • Minimum speed: 25 WPM
  • Maximum Permissible errors: 5%

How does RRB calculate typing speed?

RRB uses a special method:

  1. They count how many characters you typed
  2. Divide by 5 (because 5 characters = 1 word) to get number of words
  3. Count mistakes and Permissible errors(5 % of total typed word)
  4. Calculate net mistakes (by deducting Permissible errors)
  5. Calculate Penalty ( 10 times of net mistakes)
  6. Calculate Net words and Divide it by 10 minutes

Example: If you typed 1700 characters with 10 mistakes:

  • Total words: 1700 ÷ 5 = 340 words
  • Total mistake: 20
  • Permissible mistake = 5 % of 340 = 17
  • Net mistakes = 20 - 17 = 3
  • Net words = 340 - 3 X 10 = 310 words
  • Final speed: 310 ÷ 10 = 31 WPM ✅ (Pass)

How are mistakes counted in RRB?

RRB counts two types of mistakes:

Big mistakes (minus 1 word each):

  • Completely wrong word
  • Missing words
  • Extra words

Small mistakes (minus 0.5 word each):

  • Spelling wrong
  • Wrong capital letter (typing “india” instead of “India”)
  • Missing or wrong punctuation

Why is RRB typing test difficult?

  • You cannot use backspace (no correction allowed)
  • Every small mistake is counted
  • 10 minutes feels very short
  • The passage uses formal language
  • You only get one chance
  • You feel nervous during exam
